Abstract
The purpose of this study was to obtain the real-ear-to-coupler differences (RECDs) for children to predict the real ear responses from the coupler responses. The data were collected from 36 ears of 19 children and 29 ears of 18 adults. The RECD measurements were obtained with the insert earphone. After inserting the calibrator adaptor plug into the coupler, the 2 cc coupler responses were measured. Each subject¡¯s earmold was inserted, and the insert earphone was attached to the earmold tubing. Then, real ear response was measured. The results showed that real ear responses were larger than coupler responses. In addition, the values of RECDs were generally greater as subjects were older and also as the test frequencies were higher. These data suggest that if the effects of microphone location and head diffraction are considered, the RECDs can be used to estimate the real ear responses for different types of hearing aids from the coupler responses. The values of RECDs can also be useful in fitting hearing aids.
